Since taking office, Schneiderman has tackled a wide range of issues, including bank fraud, consumer fraud, a controversial method of gas drilling termed hydrofacking, mortgage loans and the foreclosure crisis, teen smoking and tobacco companies, and speaking out against civil unions. He also sued a Pennsylvania power plant that was emitting dangerous levels of sulphur dioxide into the state, and shut down fraudulent immigration service companies. Additionally, just weeks after he was elected, he launched an initiative that included a "Taxpayer Protection Unit" which cracks down on corruption in a variety of areas, including state contracts and pension funds.

Schneiderman was in private practice as an attorney for 15 years, and later served as a partner at the firm of Kirkpatrick and Lockhart. He was also a public interest lawyer for many years, and handled issues ranging from representing taxpayers in lawsuits against the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), to tenants attempting to evict drug dealers from their buildings, to women seeking access to health clinics. Additionally, he served in the New York State Senate as a leading reformer. His many legislative accomplishments include the passage of tough ethics reforms, and the strictest law in the nation to uncover fraud against taxpayers.

''Consumers need a strong advocate fighting for them, so that when they buy a car or they get a mortgage and have played by the rules, they know they are getting what they paid for. My office will continue to play a strong role in protecting New Yorkers from consumer frauds because tough enforcement is essential to restoring the public’s faith that the economic playing field is level,” Schneiderman was quoted as saying in a recent email interview, posted at his website.

Schneiderman graduated with honors from Harvard Law School. He is also a graduate of Amherst College.
