The group was founded by Arthur D. Gunther, an experienced lawyer and recruiter. Gunther began at the University of Illinois. In 1985 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and was named to the school's Bronze Tablet. After receiving the Silver Medal of the 1985 CPA exam, he went on to be an auditor at Arthur Anderson & Company. From there he moved onto the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of Berkley where he earned the distinction of Order of the Coif. In the Northern District of Illinois, Gunther served as a law clerk for the Honorable James F. Holderman of the United States District Court. He went on to practice commercial litigation at Sachnoff & Weaver, LTD. (now Reed Smith) in 1992. After five years at the firm he moved on to pursue legal recruiting.

Today, Gunther Group has assisted more than 200 attorneys in acquiring positions. Attorneys come to Gunther Group from all walks of life including equity partners and first year associates. Gunther Group has placed attorneys that practice in antitrust and marketing law, bankruptcy, corporate law, employee benefits, environmental law, finance, health care law, information technology, intellectual property, labor and employment, litigation, real estate, taxes, and trusts and estates.

Christine G Lyons and Lindsay Greenwood also play large roles as recruiters at Gunther Group. Lyons received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 1996 and is a 1999 magna cum laude Georgetown University Law Center graduate. She was similarly elected to the Order of the Coif at Gorgetown and served on the Georgetown Law Journal. She began as an associate at Sidley Austin and has practiced at and was the hiring attorney for Grippo & Elden. Greenwood attended DePaul University College of Law in 2001 after receiving her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida. She has worked throughout Chicago and Washington, D.C. in the corporate healthcare practice counseling healthcare practitioners on business transactions and compliance matters.
