Now reporting for duty: four dozen guinea pigs-check that, "recruits"-set to start Howrey Simon Arnold & White's much-hyped summer-associate "boot camp."

Instead of the usual summer full of free lunches, ball games and over-the-top evening cruises, Howrey's 2001 summer crowd has a relatively labor-intensive four weeks in store. Beginning in late May, the forty-eight recruits will bunk down at a Washington-area conference complex, where they'll cut their teeth as litigators in a two-week mock trial. They'll spend the next two weeks chipping in at one of the D.C.-based Howrey's half-dozen offices around the country.

Howrey announced the program last summer, generating a wave of hype that included stories in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. The camp is Howrey's effort to combat the turn-over problems that afflict so many big firms. Give law students a dose of what firm life is really like, the theory goes, and those who genuinely want that will come-and stay. "Students are hungry for something different," says hiring partner Richard Ripley, the camp's "colonel."

So: What sort of second-year law student would forgo a summer of slacking in favor of actual work? Recruit Brett Howard, a University of Iowa 2L, says he doesn't mind missing out on the usual summer frills. "How far does that get me?" he says. In fact, Howard and other recruits sound downright eager to be put through their paces. "I'll be getting intense training that a lot of other firms don't offer," says University of Colorado 2L Vandana Sharma. "Other firms dream up work to do and take summer associates out to bars," says University of Utah second-year David Mull. "At Howrey, I'll be getting an intensive trial-advocacy course."

The recruits include students from some of Howrey's usual hunting grounds, such as Georgetown, which has four 2L's bound for boot camp, and William and Mary, which is sending at least three. Roughly a third of the students are from Top 25 schools, Howrey says.

The firm declined to say how this group stacks up against previous summer classes, but Ripley says he's pleased with the depth and the breadth of the group.

Skeptics, including Kelly Voight, a placement director at Yale Law School, aren't so sure boot camp will have much effect on turnover. Voight calls the program "an interesting idea" but suggests there might be a simpler way (e.g., "giving associates more interesting work") to keep young lawyers from straying. Others see the shorter-than-usual program as a simple money-saving move. But Brett Howard thinks the concept could work. "I think it will blunt some of the expectations for the first few years," he says.

Surviving the camp itself shouldn't be too rough. The D.C.-area conference center will be set up more like a college campus (pub, pool tables and a fleet of bicycles) than a basic-training facility, and Howrey's offices around the country aren't exactly army barracks. Recruits will also earn a hefty $3,000 per week, several hundred dollars more than many D.C. summer associates pocket. And once their four-week tour of duty is up, students can always grab a few weeks of R&R at a regular firm.
