An insurance attorney is a lawyer who handles legal matters related to insurance laws and insurance regulations. Insurance law involves issues and disputes arising from the sale, use, and payment of insurance policies, including insurance bad faith and insurance fraud. There are two main types of insurance attorneys: Insurance coverage attorneys and insurance defense attorneys. Insurance coverage attorneys focus on insurance contracts and evaluate what is covered under a given insurance policy and up to what amount. Insurance defense attorneys focus on the defense of insurance companies when there is a dispute about how much the insurance company is being asked to pay under a particular policy.
