Each year, the number of law-related jobs increases because the number of laws is growing at an amazing rate. This is happening for three reasons: 1) new inventions, 2) population growth, and 3) demands for more security in all phases of life. New devices that come into popular use, the snowmobile for example, spur new laws. More people, living closer together, disturb each other more often. New laws result. Cat control ordinances were laughed at years ago. Now, officials, who are swamped with complaints, are eager to have them. Hundreds of new laws concerning welfare and other benefits stem from concern for a more secure society.

Each of these new laws is written, reviewed, voted upon, enforced, and, often, challenged-by different individuals who are doing their daily work. These developments create jobs and people taking these jobs must have thorough understanding of specific laws, or sets of laws.

It is not necessary to have training in law to secure these jobs. However, many of these jobholders do have some legal training. It is also true that many lawyers secure law degrees by attending law school at night while working at other jobs (often law-related) during the day.

Legal jobs will be filled, in future years, by persons with a wide range of talents and interests. If you like being "your own boss," you may want to build your own law practice. Those who prefer working with others might choose work in a law firm or a corporation. Someone who enjoys responsibility might want to work as legal secretary to a lawyer who practices alone. Another secretary might want to work in a large office to develop expertise.

Lawyers or legal assistants who do research work labor alone in quiet libraries. By contrast, the lawyer with a personal injury practice operates in a lively setting. Conversations with clients, witnesses, officials, and opposing counsel continue through the day.

Public defenders meet a host of new faces every morning. So do prosecutors. These lawyers spend half of their working lives in courtrooms most lawyers never see. They may clock miles each week moving back and forth between office, court, and jail. Other lawyers do their work mostly within the walls of a particular office.

Most lawyers spend all of their working lives in the state or province where they are licensed to practice. All of the clients of many lawyers live within the boundaries of one city. On the other hand, corporate or government lawyers are often transferred from place to place. Over half of all U.S. lawyers work in Washington, D.C., and the five most populous states.

A lawyer who is a legislative aide may write a new consumer law. Another lawyer in a consumer affairs office may be called upon to explain it; still another to plan enforcement. A legal assistant might help a busy lawyer who is working to uphold (or fight) this same law. These five individuals are helping people with problems. Each may feel that he or she is helping, in a small way, to build a better society. Every person who holds a legal job has the chance to play some part in the never-ending effort to bring greater justice to everyone.
