Government Paralegal Job Description

'A government paralegal is someone who works on legal matters such as transactions and court cases under the supervision of licensed attorneys in a government law-related setting. Government paralegals (also known as government legal assistants) work in all types of government law offices, including for federal, state and local governments. Government lawyers such as deputy city attorneys and deputy public defenders are very busy and they rely on government paralegals to assist them as much as possible in helping get the work done within the bounds of legal and ethical rules.

Government Affairs Paralegal

The candidate will be researching and analyzing legislation and regulations on federal, state and international issues and communicating issue status to Senior Director, Global Government Affairs & Public Policy. Working with the Senior Director, will be instrumental in researching and developing public policy positions for globally. Track and analyze national, state and international legislative and regulatory activities impacting business. Draft advocacy communications including testimony, regulatory comments and meeting materials. Draft Government Affairs communications including newsletter stories and issue updates. Track and report on relevant developments from Congressional Quarterly and the Federal Register. Work with Senior Director, Global Government Affairs & Public Policy, to develop and inform advocacy positions. Enable and support Global Government Affairs strategy and execution. Work successfully with key contacts, including working across functional teams.

Requirements: Paralegal Certificate from ABA-approved program preferred. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills and is able to effectively interact with colleagues, consultants and the public. 5+ years of legal or government affairs experience. Experience working in the Life Sciences industry preferred. Excellent research, analytical and oral and written communication skills. Able to synthesize and explain complex concepts to key audiences. Effective time management and organizational skills as indicated by ability to complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Self-started and ability to ruthlessly prioritize to drive company goals and objectives.

Legal- Litigation/Government Investigations & Regulatory Enforcement- Paralegal II

Duties: Assist in the investigation and response to inquiries from regulators and other governmental agencies, including but not limited to, gathering, organizing and reviewing responsive documents for productions; and analyzing transactional data; Respond to Ad-Hoc requests from line of business colleagues; Provide reporting and trending information to legal management; Research legal issues, and provide general administrative support as necessary; Identify, escalate and resolve issues as appropriate; and Work closely with colleagues on the team and in other lines of business or control areas to ensure comprehensive and effective support.

Qualifications: 4-year college degree or associates degree with a paralegal certificate; 3+ years of experience working for a law firm, financial institution, government agency, regulator and/or self-regulatory organization; Demonstrated leadership, problem solving, interpersonal and relationship management skills; Excellent communication (verbal and written); Excellent organizational skills with keen attention to detail and accuracy; A proven record of successfully handling multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced, high profile and rapidly evolving regulatory environment; Ability to synthesize information to reach logical conclusions; High degree of initiative, self direction and ability to work independently as well as with a team; Highly motivated, results oriented and client focused; Strong PC skills (knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint); Tact and good judgment in handling confidential information; and Ability to interact effectively and professionally at all levels.

Legal Assistant / Paralegal (Local Government Law)

Duties: Assist special district and water attorneys. Typing, proofreading, drafting correspondence, calendaring deadlines, organizing and scanning files, reviewing statutes, client communication, and electronically filing documents with the court. Will work closely with a team of attorneys and staff. Candidates should be able to work independently and problem solve, able work cooperatively with a variety of people and motivated to do great work for clients.

Qualifications: Experience with or motivation to learn local government (special district) law and water law is key. Accuracy, attention to detail, and strong computer, writing and organizational skills. 

Government Contracts Paralegal

The candidate will work closely with this practice group in a wide ranges of tasks, including: manage bid protests with the GOA and the Court of Federal Claims, manage trials at Federal and State Court, organize, manage, and update case files/pleadings (electronic and paper copies) including documents subject to protective order restrictions. Candidate will also Cite Check, Blue Book, and proofread pleadings, briefs and other documents as required and coordinate and prepare legal teams in bid protest hearings both at GAO and at Court, prepare for trial, legal research, and track deadlines and maintain calendars. A college degree and 3 years of relevant experience is required. Candidate should have knowledge of Government Contracts law and practices. Strong communication and organizational are required. Candidate should be proficient with MS Office and records management. Paralegals have a minimum billing requirement of 1600 hours per year.
