As part of a year-long project to help foster a better understanding between people of the United States and people of other nations, Lindner will be studying in Syria. The Fulbright Program was founded in 1966 by United States Senator J. William Fulbright with the intention of offering grants for international educational exchange. The program operates in more than 155 countries and more than 300,000 students, scholars, teachers, professionals, scientists, and artists have taken part in it. The program is sponsored by the United States Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs from an annual appropriation from the United States congress. So far, forty people who have participated in the program have gone on to win the Nobel Prize.

Lindner had previously worked in Syria prior to law school and was prompted to apply for the Fulbright program because of her experience then. She lived for four months in Damascus where she studied Arabic after finishing the law school application process.

This turn in Syria will see Lindner studying non-governmental organizations. She will compare charities which have done exceptionally in the country to ones that have not fared well. Her aim is to distinguish why certain charities have not flourished as others have. She has already contacted the other students who will be studying in Syria as well in order to collaborate with them.
Lindner is excited to return to Syria. Upon reflection of her time in the country before she says, ''I fell in love with the city. Everyone I met was warm and welcoming and it was very easy to feel at home. I also loved the sense of history that Damascus carries, there is a sense that people from all over the world have been passing through for centuries before you.''
