Legal Job Market Improving In Spite Of High Unemployment

Most law firms avoid posting jobs on Indeed or LinkedIn due to high costs. Instead, they publish them on their own websites, bar association pages, and niche legal boards. LawCrossing finds these hidden jobs, giving you access to exclusive opportunities. Sign up now!

In July, August, and September, more employees obtained jobs in the legal field than lost them according to a recent employment report out from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). According to the report, more than 4,000 new jobs were given over the last three months.

In September alone, 2,500 legal jobs were added to the field. That's an increase of over 1,000 jobs added during August when the field saw 1,400 jobs added to its ranks.

While the increase is great news compared to the heavy declines seen in the first half of 2010, the numbers are no comparison to the increases seen in 2009.

In September 2009, the BLS showed an increase of 6,700 jobs during September alone. That's a considerably higher number compared to the last three months combined.

Nonetheless, the legal sector can consider itself lucky as the overall job market takes a big hit. According to the BLS, 95,000 jobs were lost throughout the country during September alone. The source of the loss, however, is not the private sector.

While the United States' private sector saw an increase of 64,000 jobs last month, government jobs took a huge dip which amounted to almost three times that number. Nearly 159,000 government jobs were lost in September. This can be attributed to the dying down of 2010 Census jobs. Additional job losses came out of local government positions.
