Yolanda Gwinn is one such attorney. A law clerk for the Magistrate Vernelis Armstrong in the U.S. District Court in Toledo, OH, Gwinn turned to a career in law after being a victim of workplace discrimination. A manager at a large department store, Gwinn was shocked to find out that a white, male trainee was making more than she was as a black woman in a higher position. Enraged and seeking change, Gwinn enrolled in law school at Ohio Northern University. She graduated in 1983.
Gwinn has been in her current position at the Toledo U.S. District Court for 13 years, and she loves her job. In addition to the time she spends doing research, Gwinn is also heavily involved in a number of bar associations and organizations including the Thurgood Marshall Law Association, the Ohio Women's Bar Association, and the Toledo Bar Association.
In fact, she recently received the Toledo Bar Association's Robert Kelb Award in recognition of her influential involvement with the association and her dedication to the association's diversity committee, which she has served on for four years.
In the past, she has served as both treasurer and president of the Toledo Women's Bar Association. "I just want to make the world a better place because I was here," Gwinn said in a Blade interview.
