The landmark case involved the La Framboise family and allegations claiming that the commercial broker that the family had hired was also representing the buyer of their property. The La Framboise's allege that their elderly parents, owners of the property, were paid less for the property than its worth, The Gomez law firm attorneys were successful in obtaining over $1 million dollars from a jury verdict.
Robert Hamparyan and Thomas Luneau, also attorneys with the Gomez Law Firm, received Outstanding Trial Lawyer of the Year Awards for the handling of the wrongful death case involving prisoner, Johnny Young, at the Donovan State Penitentiary. Young, suffering from mental illness, died minutes after the guards restrained him in the jail yard. Although the guards denied it, the autopsy results revealed that his injuries were consistent with a chokehold. The defense in the case, claimed that Young was a victim of ''excited delirium' which brought on a 'psychotic outburst.' The Gomez attorneys were successful in obtaining $2 million in the wrongful death suit which was awarded to Young's elderly mother. She also received an additional $100,000 for Young's pre-death pain and suffering.
The Outstanding Trial Lawyer of the Year Award is granted to San Diego based attorneys who are instrumental in an outstanding civil or criminal jury trial. The selected winners must also demonstrate liability aspects, service to the community, ingenuity and a favorable monetary settlement.
