Simpson Thacher & Bartlett

Leading law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett has significantly added to its London office by hiring Angus Lennox, a seasoned real estate private equity partner, from Blackstone Inc., a long-time client. Lennox, who was managing director in Blackstone's European real estate business, will join Simpson Thacher's team later this year.

During his tenure at Blackstone, Lennox was primarily focused on handling acquisitions, disposals, and joint ventures, showcasing his expertise in the real estate private equity market across various jurisdictions. Before his role at Blackstone, Lennox had a successful stint at the law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

Alden Millard, Chair of Simpson Thacher's executive committee, expressed confidence in Lennox's abilities, stating, "Angus has deep expertise in the real estate private equity market across jurisdictions and is well known for providing creative and commercial advice on complex real estate deals."

Simpson Thacher has a longstanding professional relationship with Blackstone, considering them a significant client. Recently, the law firm played a pivotal role in advising Blackstone on the successful $30.4 billion raise for its latest global real estate fund, Blackstone Real Estate Partners X, an achievement announced in April.

In response to Angus Lennox's departure, Farhad Karim, Chief Operating Officer of Blackstone Europe and Global General Counsel of Blackstone Real Estate, conveyed their best wishes, stating, "We wish [Lennox] every success and look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role."

It is noteworthy that Simpson Thacher had previously strengthened its London team by bringing in Geoffrey Bailhache, who served as Blackstone's former General Counsel for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, as a partner in 2021.

Last week, Blackstone made headlines by becoming the first manager of alternative investments to achieve a remarkable milestone of $1 trillion in assets. However, the news was tempered by a 39% drop in second-quarter distributable earnings, attributed to a slump in asset sales.

With the addition of Angus Lennox to its team, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett aims to enhance its capabilities further in providing top-notch legal counsel to clients in the dynamic real estate private equity market.
