Fastcase and vLex have announced a merger and will now operate as a single entity called vLex Group. The Fastcase brand will remain in the US, while vLex will maintain its name in other global markets. The merger will not affect the individual offerings of both companies, including Fastcase’s Docket Alarm, but their legal research data will be combined to create a global law library. Plans for more integrated offerings are also in the pipeline. According to Fastcase CEO Ed Walters said, the merger will create a law library with over one billion documents. It will help to realize their long-term vision of having all the world’s laws online, searchable, and translatable into any language.
While Fastcase and vLex will maintain their respective brands in their respective markets, customers of both companies will experience immediate changes as the two entities begin to combine their legal research data. According to Fastcase CEO Ed Walters, the two companies combined resources and expertise will result in additional integrated offerings that leverage their large research databases and AI capabilities. Walters noted that the legal intelligence database resulting from the merger will be the most extensive and essential training set for large language models in law ever assembled.
The merger between Fastcase and vLex has been years in the making, with the two companies building a relationship over decades. Financial backing from private equity firms Oakley Capital and Brain Capital Credit helped make the merger possible. It will help vLex Group expand its global reach and support its AI lab in developing new AI-powered legal tools. This merger is the latest expansion for Fastcase, which has grown significantly through M&A deals over the past few years.
