Cornell Prelaw Program with Immersive Law School-Like Environment and Internship Opportunities

Experience the Culture of Legal Practice through Cornell's Prelaw Program in New York City

During the previous summer, Evan Hammer, a sophomore economics major considering law school, worked at Cohen and Gresser, LLP in Midtown Manhattan. This internship was part of Cornell's Prelaw Program and Internship in New York City, which involved a rigorous three-week prelaw course taught by C. Evan Stewart, one of Cohen and Gresser's senior lawyers. Hammer spoke highly of Stewart, describing him as one of the best professors he has had. The course covered various legal areas, including tort law, contract law, and criminal law, giving Hammer a comprehensive introduction to these complex topics. The experience solidified Hammer's interest in pursuing a career in law.

Distinguished Attorney C. Evan Stewart Teaches Immersive Law School-Like Course at Cornell

For the past 17 years, Stewart, a distinguished attorney and author taught the four-credit course The American Legal System (GOVT 3150) through Cornell's School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions (SCE). He considers the course a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to experience a law school-like environment and immerse themselves in the culture of legal practice. Stewart is renowned for his engaging teaching style and in-depth discussions about the ethics of practicing law.

The American Legal System (GOVT 3150): A Unique Opportunity for Undergrads
United States

According to Stewart, The American Legal System (GOVT 3150) is not an introductory course for first-year students but an immersive experience designed to offer a complete and realistic view of first-year law school. The procedure involves the Socratic method of teaching and extensive reading, which can help students determine whether law school is the right choice for them. The system provides an advantage for students compared to their first-year law school peers.

Isabel Hou, a junior majoring in Industrial and Labor Relations, appreciated how the course mimicked first-year law courses and provided a valuable opportunity to witness oral arguments at the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Lemieux, a senior at Boston College, said that Professor Stewart's honesty about the challenges of law school and the practice of law was helpful.

After completing the course, students are typically assigned internships by the program, such as working in a law firm or institute. For instance, Lemieux interned at Seneca Women and Hou at Cornell's Office of the General Counsel. Associate general counsel, Adam Pence, believed that working with law clerks was a fantastic way for undergraduate students to learn about the practice of higher education law.

Hou recommends the Prelaw Program to anyone interested in pursuing a legal career, including those interested in government, public policy, or litigation. The course challenges preconceived notions about law and requires an open mind. The application deadline is April 14, and the program will run from June 5 to July 14, 2023.
