New York City Mayor Appoints 10 Judges to Tackle Backlog and Improve Court System Efficiency

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced the appointment of 10 judges, with six for Family Court, three for Criminal Court, and one interim appointment to Civil Court. The works aim to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the court system, reduce the backlog of cases accumulated during the pandemic, and advance public safety and justice in the city. Chief Counsel to City Hall Brendan McGuire emphasized that the judges are highly qualified and dedicated to tackling the city's challenges. The appointments are part of the administration's vision of creating a more just and safe city for all New Yorkers. The judges appointed to Family Court are Lauren T. Broderick, Sharon N. Clarke, Janette Cortes-Gomez, Nisha Menon, Hari K. Singh, and Raymi V. Ramseur-Usher. Matthew V. Grieco, Janet M. McDonnell, and Jennifer A. Tubridy were appointed to Criminal Court, while Craig J. Mayor Adams selected the following judges to preside over the Family Court:

  • Judge Lauren T. Broderick has worked for the Family Court Bureau at The Legal Aid Society of Nassau County for 18 years. She held various positions, including staff attorney, deputy bureau chief, and bureau chief.
  • Judge Sharon N. • Judge Janette Cortes-Gomez began her legal career with the New York City Administration for Children's Services, then worked as a solo practitioner as part of the assigned counsel plan in Queens and Bronx counties for 17 years, and served as a commissioner of the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board. Before her appointment to the bench, she was the principal court attorney to a Bronx County Supreme Court acting justice.
  • Judge Nisha Menon was a litigation associate at a private firm and staff attorney with The Legal Aid Society, Juvenile Rights Practice, for over seven years before becoming general counsel for a manufacturing and engineering company. She then joined the New York State Unified Court System and served as a court attorney referee in Kings County Family Court for six years.
  • Judge Hari K. Subsequently, she operated her solo practice for over 14 years before working for the New York State Unified Court System in Kings County Supreme, Family, and Civil courts for the past 12 years. Before being appointed a judge, she was a principal law clerk.

Mayor Adams selected the following judges for Criminal Court:
