During an interview with CNBC, Nguyen, who resides in New York City, it was revealed that she earns an annual salary of $85,000, despite being a contract worker. She further asserted that she was promised a full-time position when hired.

The city's recently implemented salary transparency law requires job listings to include salary ranges. The LinkedIn post for the same role as Nguyen's showed a salary range of $117,200 to $175,800, but it no longer accepts applications. Nguyen shared the job posting with her colleagues, which led to a meeting with the Human Resources department.

Despite requesting a raise for months, Nguyen claimed she was told Citigroup did not have the financial means to increase her salary. A spokesperson for Citigroup explained that they use Photon, a contractor service, to negotiate pay rates on behalf of contractors and that they have no control over contractor salaries. Nguyen expressed her vulnerability as a contractor and shared her doubts about the promised full-time employee conversion. "The full-time employee conversion is being dangled in front of me like a reward that I'm not sure I'm guaranteed," she explained to the outlet.
