Goodwin Procter Hires White Collar Partner and Health Sciences Leaders from Troutman Pepper
Goodwin Procter, a U.S. law firm, announced on Monday that it has recruited 14 partners from its competitor, Troutman Pepper Hamilton Sanders. The group includes a former senior leader and key partners who lead the health sciences and healthcare transactions practices. These partners will be joining Goodwin Procter in various offices, including a new location in Philadelphia. According to the Philadelphia Business Journal, a group of 30 to 40 lawyers, including 17 partners, were set to join Goodwin Procter, as reported by anonymous sources.
On Monday, a spokesperson for Goodwin Procter declined to provide any further information on whether any additional lawyers will be joining the firm beyond the 14 announced partners, stating that there is no additional information to share at this time.
Firm Continues to Expand Presence in Philadelphia Legal Market
The addition of the team of lawyers specialized in life sciences, healthcare, private equity, and white-collar law comes shortly after the firm had to lay off employees due to a decrease in demand. The layoffs earlier this month affected junior lawyers and business professionals. Goodwin Procter stated that it had to let go of 5% of its U.S. associates, professional track attorneys, paralegals, science advisors, and operations staff.
Goodwin Procter, known for its expertise in life sciences, technology, and private equity work, is among the several firms, including Cooley and Stroock, Stroock & Lavan, that have recently informed employees of layoffs.
Among the lawyers joining Goodwin Procter from Troutman Pepper are white-collar partner Thomas Gallagher, who held the position of vice chairman at his previous firm until this year, Rachael Bushey, who was the chair of the health sciences department, and John Jones, who served as the chair of the health care transactions and regulatory practices at Troutman Pepper.
A spokesperson for Troutman Pepper did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the departure of the group of lawyers. When asked for comment last week after the news was reported, the firm stated that it appreciates the lawyers' contributions and wishes them well.
Goodwin Procter stated that most of the partners will be based in its new Philadelphia office, which is officially opening after the firm first entered the market last year with the remote hiring of private equity partner Barbara Shander and a group of associates.
