Finding a new job can be a struggle, but don’t make it harder on yourself by expecting simple online applications to get you in the door quickly. Here are five tips to help you get noticed in the current job market.
1. Use your network. You’ve heard this a million times, so what’s one more? Most people find their jobs through networking, rather than simply applying through an online posting. Use LinkedIn or ask friends, family, family friends, or just about anyone if their company is looking to hire or to keep an eye out for you. Most people are happy to help.
2. Cover letter. Your resume and cover letter are the first impression most hiring managers will get of you, and they could be reading up to a hundred letters a day. Write something that will grab their attention in the very first paragraph. Don’t worry about being untraditional. Taking a risk can often pay off.
4. Overhaul your LinkedIn account. LinkedIn isn’t just a great way for you to make connections; it’s often the first place a potential future employer will go to check you out. Be sure to have a professional looking profile picture, complete your profile, build your credibility through recommendations, include any appropriate work examples, and include a summary with your key skills and career goals.
5. Attend networking events. What better way to meet new people and find new opportunities than at a networking event? Search for events in the industry of your choice and attend as many as possible. Even if you only talk with one person, you never know where that connection could go for you. Be sure to bring along business cards!
