An understanding of soul can be hard to define. When blog “Lawyers In Search of Soul” author Mike Ethridge talks about soul, he means a “certain depth of experience and the quality that surrounds that experience.” He strives to explore the ways that lawyers can make sense of their lives in what is often exhausting and difficult work.
The quote “We are not here to be good. We are here to be whole,” by Carl Jung is the motivating quote for the blog. The blog can be described as a journey of self-inquiry and reflection for not only Ethridge but all lawyers looking to make sense of their job. Ethridge saw the levels of depression, substance abuse, and anxiety has symptoms of a loss of soul in lawyers so he decided to investigate through discussion on this blog. The point of “searching” is to find some part of ourselves that is “capable of experiencing life deeply and profoundly” whether through yoga, art galleries, cooking, etc.
Ethridge has been practicing for 25 years and is currently a partner with Carlock, Copeland and Stair. He made a bold leap many years ago and decided to attend law school after graduating from seminary and briefly serving in the ministry.
