How much does class rank really matter? I'm ranked in the top 40 percent of my class, but it seems like the best firms only consider students from the top 10 percent. Is that true?

Mediocre in New Jersey
Monsieur Mediocre,
The short answers: (1) A lot. (2) Yes.
High-powered firms tend to recruit only from the top of the academic heap (and often only at the top law schools). Rather than fighting against this unfortunate reality-which, by the way, has been a source of annoyance for years-look instead to places where your talents will be appreciated.
The firm with the best reviews might not be the best for you. Take a serious look at the environment that suits your needs. Don't lust after the biggest paycheck. Lust instead after the best one.
If your grades disqualify you from a certain firm, don't waste your time with them. Look instead to the thousands of firms that offer promising careers (with considerably less stress and more weekend time).
