Law schools frequently tell students that law school is designed to "teach you how to think like a lawyer." Left unsaid is that law schools are not designed to teach you how to practice law. Indeed, what little practical advice I received in law school was not particularly helpful when I entered private practice. Practicing law is really not the hard part of being a lawyer, though, and the knowledge you need to practice law is best gained through practical experience.

What aspiring lawyers should learn, however, is that like all professions, the practice of law is a business. To succeed in operating your own business or within the confines of a larger business (law firm, corporation, governmental body, etc.) you need to begin developing the skills needed to succeed in business. Most importantly, the ability to develop business (i.e., clients) is the key to independence and prosperity within the practice of law. I have worked at a large law firm, a medium size law firm, and recently started my own law firm. In all three locations, the bulk of my work came through referrals from other lawyers. Build relationships with your colleagues in law school. Those relationships are more important than you can possibly understand. Begin getting involved in your community, even if you do not intend to practice law in the city where you attend law school. Get involved in the local bar association-even as a law student. The relationships you will build in these activities are just as important to your future career as memorizing the outlines for your classes.

The practice of law is an enjoyable and rewarding experience. At the heart of every legal practice, though, are the clients. Start working on your business development skills now.
