The award was established in honor of A.T. Walden, a nationally recognized civil rights lawyer who was involved in cases that ultimately led to the desegregation of the Atlanta public schools and the University of Georgia. Walden later served as a judge in the Atlanta Municipal Court, making him the first black judge in Georgia since the post-Civil War Reconstruction era. He was also the founder of the Gate City Bar Association, an affiliate chapter of the National Bar Association. The Gate City Bar Association was established in 1948 and stands as the state's oldest African American bar association.

Franklin's accomplishments make him the ideal candidate for the annual award. Just last month he was selected as one of three recipients of the2012 Commitment to Equality Awards, which will be presented on February 23rd by the State Bar of Georgia's Committee to Promote Inclusion in the Profession.

Franklin joined King & Spalding in 2000 and currently serves as a partner in the firm's tort and environmental practice group in Atlanta, where he concentrates on complex and high-stakes product liability litigation. He has served as counsel for major companies in the automotive, pharmaceutical, beverage, and package delivery industries. In 2004 he served as in-house counsel for the General Motors Corporation product litigation group. In this position, he was in charge of both locating and retaining outside counsel while also overseeing complex automobile product liability litigation. Throughout his time with King & Spalding, he has handled a range of matters within the continental US, Puerto Rico, Europe, and South America.

In addition to his practice, Franklin is heavily involved in a number of pro bono and community service undertakings. He has served as a mentor for the Mayor's Youth Program and succeeded in obtaining his firm's support for the program, which provides assists students during their college education. He also works with the Truancy Intervention Project and the Dispossessory Project to provide pro bono legal representation to children and to those facing eviction. He has devoted two years to the Gate City Hall of Fame program, during which time he served as the chairman of the scholarship committee, providing scholarships to promising law students.

Franklin served on the Georgia chapter of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law in association with the Election protection coalition and has functioned as a spokesperson for the National Bar Association on Election Protection. He also served on the student speaker series program of the Center of Law, Health & Society, Public Interest Law Society at the Georgia State University College of Law. He has also provided interview and translation services within both the public and private sectors.
