Hobson-Powell has always been ahead of his years. He entered kindergarten two years early and by the age of four, he had already he developed an interest in law. “I thought I wanted to be the attorney general,” said Hobson-Powell. Ultimately, his decision to go to law school was cemented when he learned about the Innocence Project. “I wanted to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves.”

The first year law student insists that his success can be attributed to his parent's support, a semi-photographic memory, and a high-level of motivation. At the age of three, he learned to read, write, and speak Chinese and at the age of 13 he enrolled in Howard University, where his father is a professor. While attending classes at Howard University, the young student happened to walk by a booth offering information about the University of Baltimore Law School. When he learned of the university's interdisciplinary undergraduate degree in public policy, history, and psychology, he opted to transfer for his senior year.

Hobson-Powell, now a prospective 2014 graduate at NCCU law school, says that he is in no rush to graduate. He is still considering the possibility of attending medical school after earning his JD. “I just want to be in a helping profession in whatever I do.”

But for now, Hobson-Powell is just enjoying his life as a law student. Although most of his classmates are about 24 years old, he insists that age is inconsequential. According to the Washington, DC native, he is just as comfortable interacting with 15-year-olds as he is with 30-year-olds. “I've been taught to be comfortable in any social setting that I'm in.”
