Combining Firms Has Become A Universal Business Strategy
Mayer, Brown & Platt, an 850-lawyer firm based in Chicago, merged with Rowe & Maw, a 250-lawyer U.K. firm in 2002. Now, mergers have become a universal business strategy. Minneapolis-based Faegre & Benson, a 450 lawyer firm, and Indianapolis-based Baker & Daniels, a 320 lawyer firm, merged together creating Faegre Baker Daniels. The firms, individually, are huge enough. The doubt here lies in the efficient operation of the 770-attorney firm which is double the size of the two components. The certainty is that mergers face more potential client conflicts than they would have if they had remained separate. The only thing is that the new Faegre Baker Daniels firm will not even have a national headquarters.
