The report, Perspectives on Fall 2010 Law Student Recruiting, observed that while entry-level recruiting volumes and summer program sizes are still not at levels seen before the recession, recruiting volumes were increasing modestly. As an example, the article cites the offer rate from summer programs for entry-level associate positions. It rebounded just over 18 points to 87.4 percent after plunging from 89.9 percent in 2008 to 69.3 percent in 2009.
This trend is expected to continue. According to the most recent Robert Half Legal Hiring Index, hiring in the U.S. legal field is expected to remain strong in the second quarter of 2011. Nearly thirty percent of lawyers interviewed said they were planning to increase legal staff in the next three months. Also, none were planning personnel reductions.
