This conspiracy theory has played itself out in several courtrooms across the country in various contexts, but most commonly as members of the armed forces refuse orders on the grounds that the President is not legally qualified to be the Commander in Chief and therefore his orders are invalid. Predictably, these cases have not ended well for the service men and women who have brought them, but the controversy continues.

The best known ''birther'' is a Moldovian born woman named Orly Taitz, JD, DDS, who practices law from the back of her dental office in Orange County, California. In addition to bringing numerous unsuccessful law suits alleging that President Obama lacks the Constitutional prerequisites for office, Dr Taitz also ran an unsuccessful campaign in 2010 for California's Secretary of State. Her publicly stated reason for running was to use the office of Secretary of State to bring even more law suits against President Obama. And while Taitz is the best known and most outspoken ''birther'', she is matched in tenacity and conviction by thousands of others.

With all the evidence of Obama's birth already in circulation, it's difficult to believe that anything will break through the cognitive dissonance and convince Taitz and her allies that the President was born in Hawaii, so it is with mixed feelings that we receive the latest news from The Aloha State. Recently elected Governor Neil Abercrombie, a former Congressman and long time friend of the Obama family, has said that he will pursue legal options to release the President's birth certificate. Under current state law, a Certificate of Live Birth is a legal document used to prove birth within the state and birth certificates cannot be released to the public. Abercrombie, acting independently, says he will ask the state's Attorney General for legal options and will pursue any legal path he can to prove the validity of Obama's birth.
