Most law firms avoid posting jobs on Indeed or LinkedIn due to high costs. Instead, they publish them on their own websites, bar association pages, and niche legal boards. LawCrossing finds these hidden jobs, giving you access to exclusive opportunities.

A United States Navy Rear Admiral, Attorney, Judge Advocate General of the Navy, active politician and of course, Dean and President of the University of New Hampshire School of Law, John Dudley Hutson has worn many hats throughout his career, and even as he prepares for retirement, there is a good chance it will be anything but. He has already made mention of directing his energies to the House of Representatives and in fact, has been approached by others to consider it. Although he has spent the majority of his adult life as a registered Republican, in 2008, he chose to switch parties and is now a dedicated Democrat and was a guest speaker at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, where he supported President Obama.
Born in North Muskegon, Michigan, Hutson was commissioned in the United States Navy after he graduated from Michigan State in 1969. After receiving his JD in 1972 from the University of Minnesota Law School, he then chose to attend the Naval Justice School in Newport Rhode Island. Upon his successful completion, he was called to Corpus Christi to lead as Chief Defense Counsel and Chief Trial Counsel until the mid 1970s. A few more transfers and he found himself back at the Naval Justice School in Newport, Rhode Island, where he taught Civil Law.
Throughout the course of his career, he spent time in Washington, DC, where he served as Staff Judge Advocate and Executive Assistant to the Commander, Naval Investigative Command. During his naval career, he served around the globe, including Europe and South Asia. He enjoyed promotions, including one to the rank of Rear Admiral.
Hutson has won many awards, both in his civilian and military careers, including the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (3 stars), Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement Medal.
If he struggles with what retirement might mean, it’s clear as to why. It’s also clear that he will likely not remain in retirement for long, even if he does take a few weeks off. He has now focused much of his attention on politics, though no announcements have been made on what, if anything, he will pursue. One thing is certain: his time spent at University of New Hampshire has made significant marks on the legal profession as a whole and certainly on each law student who had the good fortune to attend while under his watch.
