Bonuses, as is commonly known, are partly a function of business performance. It's put forth in the blog posting that while bonuses are probably not going to be at the banner 2007 levels, the market and economic conditions have improved over 2009. Law firm layoffs have decreased. Many firms that instituted salary cuts or freezes in response to the Great Recession have overturned those measures.

Legal recruiter Gary Klein was quoted as saying in the Law 360.com article, 'How to Score a Major Bonus from Your Firm': ''In many law firms, bonuses are considered 'You're still employed.' With tens of thousands of lawyers out of work, it would be remarkably rambunctious of an associate to raise bonuses in a conversation with partners.'' He also was quoted as saying that ''bonuses remain a fraught subject at law firms.''

Gary Klein, founder of Klein, Landau & Romm, graduated with Distinction in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After two years practicing psychology in Illinois, he moved to Boston to attend Northeastern University School of Law, from which he earned his J.D. degree in 1976. In 1977, Gary joined a litigation and regulatory boutique law firm.

Gary was a lead litigation lawyer representing PATCO, the Air Traffic Controllers' Union during their strike against the federal government in 1981. That experience led directly to his decision to start a new career, legal recruiting. Gary then founded one of the first legal search firms in Washington, DC.
