You could get around to all those chores you have on your to-do list, but who wants to clean out the rain gutters on the weekend? You've probably been itching to do something wild and crazy. Something to feed your inner dare-devil. Sounds to me like a thrill ride is just what the J.D. ordered.
Sitting atop the Stratosphere and overlooking the Las Vegas Strip, the ''Big Shot'' thrill ride catapults 16 riders from the 921-foot high platform up the tower's mast to a height of 1,081 feet. Traveling at 45 miles per hour, riders experience 4G's as they reach the very top, and feel negative G's on the way down. Yeah, that's great and all, but 45 miles per hour? We drive faster than that trying to get to work on time every morning.
Then there's ''Goliath'' in Southern California. Towering 255 feet above earth, the massive steel superstructure has one of the world's tallest drops and at speeds of 85 miles per hour, is one of the fastest rollercoasters in existence. But everyone has done the Magic Mountain thing. LawCrossing members are a distinct group and, as such, deserve a distinct experience.
That brings us to ''Dodon-pa.'' You may be wondering, ''What in the world is a 'Dodon-pa'?'' Well, its Japan's answer to the merry-go-rounds we call thrill rides here in the United States. Dodon-pa is the world's fastest roller coaster, propelling riders at 107 miles per hour and putting them through the G-forces that astronauts endure. But the Dodon-pa ride, at the Fujikyu Highland Park, in Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture, costs about $10 a ride. Doesn't exactly fit the requirements of a LawCrossing weekend. Sorry Japan. Close, but no cigar.
Which is why space travel is the only way to go this LawCrossing weekend. Not only will you get the thrill of rocketing into suborbital space at 2,284 miles per hour, but you will be one of only a handful of people who can claim astronaut status. Just think of all the parties you'll be invited to. You can show up decked out in your spacesuit (that's right, you might be able to keep it as a souvenir). You can show off your pictures of the sun behind Earth's silhouette amidst a background of stars (you can actually take a camera onboard). For LawCrossing members, space is the ultimate tourist attraction.
''Impossible'' you say? Well, walking around town in a spacesuit might be, but private space travel isn't. In fact, it's been done. There are even varying packages. You can opt to pay $15 to $20 million and stay in orbit for a week. Or, if you only have moments to spare, $100,000 will buy you an 80 second climb at a velocity several times the speed of sound. You'll even get to experience 3 to 4 minutes of zero gravity. Enjoy this while you can, because you are then in for 15 to 20 minutes of coasting back to the Earth's surface.
If this isn't the ultimate thrill ride, I don't know what is. But you'd better hurry. The first non-government, privately-funded spaceflight is set to launch Monday, June 21, 2004 from Mojave, California. SpaceShipOne will be ferried by an aircraft known as the White Knight to an altitude of about 9.5 miles. This leg of the trip will take approximately one hour, so remember to print out some articles from the LawCrossing Archives. Then you can buckle up and experience the ride to end all rides. That is, until next LawCrossing weekend.
