Every year the chair of the ABA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) chooses a program to promote public service by young attorneys as they begin their law career. The purpose is to encourage the young lawyers to be involved in community service that is supported on a national basis by all members of the ABA. The ABA YLD also makes the tools available for the program to be taught in schools across the nation. They are easily accessible via a website developed to support the program, www.abanet.org/yld/chooselaw/home.shtml.

The ''Choose Law'' program was developed by a group of Young Minority Lawyers in the ABA YLD and it is promoted at the Bar Association Level and is taken to states and local communities by volunteer attorneys who have stepped up to implement the program in their neighborhood schools.

The program is taught with a video and a written guide with a history and facts unknown to most about successful attorneys in the legal field from minority backgrounds. They use testimonies from people of color who have chosen law as a career to encourage others to ''Choose Law''.

The program is spread by the ABA YLD who goes to large cities to present the program and teach city youth and other young attorney volunteers the value of implementing ''Choose Law''. They have held conferences in Baltimore, Miami and Chicago. Smaller cities have the program through the efforts of the state bar associations and other associations affiliated with the Bar.

Two of the programs which have raised awareness and have been most successful are in Memphis, Tennessee and Los Angeles, California. Lawyers who presented the ''Choose Law'' program in Memphis say students have been inspired to think about their futures in a new way and are encouraged by the volunteers to plan a path to work toward a legal career. The Los Angeles presentation by lawyers from the YLD Minority Committee focused their efforts at Dorsey High School where a strong attitude for the legal profession was developed. The program continues to be successful. There are many good things about the American Bar Association. The Young Lawyers Division chooses a community development program to support or create each year. The YLD created the ''Wills for Heroes'' program that gained great success as lawyers volunteered to create wills for emergency first responders in New York City. The ABA also makes tools available for lawyers who would like to volunteer.
