Judge Samuel Kent was indicted on Thursday on charges of abusive sexual contact and attempted sexual abuse of a female employee. Kent works in the Southern District of Texas, and is one of the more flamboyant characters on the federal bench. He is well known for his famously acerbic opinions, including several that just slam the lawyers in the case. He also has done several poetic opinions. So he's a bit unusual, to put it mildly.
But there aren't many federal judges who get indicted on sex abuse charges. The investigation was started in November 2007, after Kent's former case manager made some complaints. Apparently, the feds found enough evidence to indict him.
Kent's attorney has stated that any relationship between him and the former case manager was consensual and that Kent will fight the charges. Kent also has no plans to retire or to resign, though with this indictment it's hard to see how much work he'll have coming his way. The 5th Circuit has already suspended him.
Kent is the first federal judge to be charged with federal sex crimes — not state ones — and also the first judge to be charged in Texas in a long time.
