"My fellow Americans," Gore said at the awards show. "People all over the world, we need to solve the climate crisis. It's not a political issue, it's a moral issue. We have everything we need to get started with the possible will to act. That's a renewable resource. Let's renew it."
Gore also laid to rest any rumors about his running for president in 2008, but not before making a joke about it. At the podium with Leonardo DiCaprio, Gore said: "My fellow Americans, I'm going to take this opportunity right here and now, to formally announce my intentions ...." At which point he was cut off by the exit music and got a good laugh from the audience. Backstage, though, he was clear in saying he has chosen to concentrate on the issue of global warming and will not be joining the 2008 presidential hopefuls.
"I really hope the decision by the academy to honor the work by director Davis Guggenheim and these producers will convince people who did not go see it before to see the movie and learn about the climate crisis and become a part of the solution," Gore said.
