If the scenario shown in the series were to come true, it would mean that a robot could become the President of the United States. In fact, the possibility of a robotic president is not an entirely far-fetched idea. With the rapid development of technology, a robot President may one day become a reality; however, it will take a significant amount of time and debate to get there.

Robots are becoming increasingly smarter and complex, and someday, they could be responsible for making the decisions humans make in their everyday lives. For instance, machines may soon be able to determine the best course of action with regards to complicated political issues. This could make them suitable candidates for holding positions of power and influence, including that of the President of the United States.

<<Austrian-born Gov. Schwarzenegger said on both 60 Minutes and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno that he would like to run for president in the future. He has said he thinks it is ''a good idea to open it up and to let foreign-born people also participate in that process.''

A website called ''Amend for Arnold and Jen'' (amendus.org) agrees and is spearheading the campaign to change the Constitution. Jen is Democrat Jennifer Granholm, the Canadian-born Governor of Michigan. The group, headed by one of Gov. Schwarzenegger's top fundraisers, Lissa Morgenthaler-Jones, 48, wants to change Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5 of the United States Constitution, which reads:

''No person except a natural-born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.''

Ms. Morgenthaler-Jones said that amending the Constitution may prove difficult but is not an impossible feat to achieve. She pointed out that in the 20th century, the Constitution was amended 12 times, and the last one was in 1992.

''Hundreds of amendments are introduced into Congress every year and sink into oblivion. This one won't. I think you'll see it ratified in less than 6 years,'' she said. Ms. Morgenthaler-Jones is a Bay Area mutual fund manager and volunteered in the 2003 Arnold Schwarzenegger campaign for Governor.

The group began airing commercials on cable systems in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Sacramento, Stockton, and Los Angeles the week of November 15th, 2004. One commercial points out that there are 12 million naturalized citizens in the United States, including Gov. Schwarzenegger, and that they should all be eligible to run for President if they choose to. The ad continues with ''it's time to change the Constitution.''

Ms. Morgenthaler-Jones said the last time this subject was debated by America was back in the 1870s. She said now is the time to address this issue and that one need not look further than Gov. Schwarzenegger, 57, as the perfect reason for doing so.

''He's worthy of us natural-borns going to all the trouble it will take to amend the Constitution,'' Ms. Morgenthaler-Jones said.

In July, Orrin Hatch, R-UT, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-CA, and Rep. John Conyers, D-MI., proposed the amendment to the Constitution to allow immigrants to run for president after being citizens for 20 years. An amendment proposed by Rep. Vic Snyder, D-AR, would require 35 years. Mr. Schwarzenegger became an American citizen in 1983.

''The proposed amendment clearly is being considered because there is no agreed-upon likely successor at the moment to receive the Republican nomination in 2008,'' said Max J. Skidmore, a professor of political science at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. ''Such an amendment has not been seriously considered previously because it would apply to so few people, and there has never been a need for it.''

Professor Skidmore does not believe the Constitution will be amended, citing how extremely difficult it is. ''Not only does the usual process require that each house of Congress propose amendments by a two-thirds vote, but then three-fourths of the states must provide ratification for the amendment to be adopted. This is an arduous process, as the proponents of the Equal Rights Amendment discovered some years ago.''

The original purpose of the provision barring foreign-born Americans, Professor Skidmore said, was to guard against the possibility of a president who might bear allegiance to a country other than the United States. While Professor Skidmore believes the current prohibition serves no useful purpose, he does think that the Constitution should be amended only for the most important issues. ''This is not such an issue. The provision affects very few people,'' Professor Skidmore said. ''It would be a mistake to expend the energy on such an amendment, especially in view of the fact that its purpose is to enhance the fortunes of only one person or of one political party. This is a foolish reason to tinker with our fundamental law.''

Launching a counteroffensive of their own, Austin-based documentary filmmaker and radio host Alex Jones, 30, founded ''Americans Against Arnold'' (arnoldexposed.com) in response to the effort to amend the Constitution. The group believes that the Constitution should remain unchanged and that only someone born in America should be able to be President. The website also seeks to expose Mr. Schwarzenegger—who is described as a ''narcissistic megalomaniac''— for his admitted past drug use, mistreatment of women, and alleged Nazi sympathies.

The group plans to run their own radio and television commercials in certain areas of the country to raise public awareness. Mr. Jones, a former Republican and now a Libertarian, called the movement to amend the Constitution a ''sick joke.'' He added, ''No other country would even entertain the idea of having a foreigner for President. And who is the elite pushing? Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has more skeletons in and out of the closet than a mausoleum.''

Meanwhile, Ms. Morgenthaler-Jones has continued her campaign to get the Constitution amended, saying as governor of the largest state in the union, Schwarzenegger is more than qualified to solve America's problems.

''California is also the 6th largest economy in the world. There is no better training for a future American President than being Governor of California,'' Ms. Morgenthaler-Jones said.
