Alternative Legal Careers: Identifying the Right Resources

You may find it difficult to discover what resources are appropriate for your non-legal career search. The best way to begin is to think about all of the possible ways you might approach a specific career area and all of the groups, agencies, individuals, and written materials that could possibly have information about the area.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DIRECTORIES:


Published annually with information on the size of the organization, the principals, and the type of business. Once you identify one company, the SIC code will help you to identify other companies in the same business.

ANNUAL REPORTS & EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION:

Most large organizations publish annual reports and information about internal career paths. Check with your placement office or write or call the company's human resources department for information.
 


PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS:

Identify which professional organizations relate to the career opportunities you are pursuing. Check directories or call the appropriate department at a local university. Often these organizations publish career information on job listings or have members available for informational interviews.

UNDERGRADUATE PLACEMENT OFFICES:

Find out if the undergraduate placement office has a career library and learn their policy for your use of the library. Employers often send multiple copies of literature and of current articles about the company. You can also identify the current job titles and open position categories by reviewing the campus recruiting information. Ask to see information about the employers who have scheduled on-campus interviews.

JOB SITES:

Job sites such as Hound.com have job listing from employers only. LawCrossing and EmploymentCrossing both aggregate jobs from employer websites, job sites and recruiters. CareerBuilder.com, Granted.com and SimplyHired are also job sites you may find useful.
