Paralegal jobs entail helping the lawyer in every aspect of his practice. They help with investigations that are being conducted by lawyers. Their main job is to assist a lawyer in any situation. They may help the lawyer get his case ready for trial, a hearing, or a corporate meeting. The paralegal can look up laws and decisions, which have been made regarding the law. There are legal documents they can help to prepare. Even though they are not allowed to do anything that would be considered acting as an attorney, they can help to prepare cases and assist the lawyer while he is in the courtroom.

Helping the lawyer to organize all the important paperwork he must have for a trial. Preliminary reports can be written by the paralegal for contracts, bankruptcies, and estate planning. There are many aspects of the legal field, in which the majority of the work can be done by the paralegal. However, the lawyer is the one who ultimately files papers and stands before the judge pleading the case.

Paralegals can work in different types of companies. The law paralegal jobs are normally found in lawyer's offices. Other areas where they can work are corporate legal offices and some government offices. What types of law do they assist? Here is a few that fall under the jobs that are assigned to paralegals:

Labor law
Corporate law
Real estate law
Family law
Criminal law
Employee benefits law
Personal injury law

The different job duties required of a corporate paralegal are many and varied as you can see. This includes certain areas that the paralegal may decide to specialize in as well. The possibilities are endless because there are so many specialties and most of them can be broken down even further. This is not typical of small offices but in the corporate world, it is fairly commonplace.

Paralegal jobs in the corporate setting can include stock and bonds, contracts between companies and their employees, and their benefit plans as well. They may also be responsible for filing financial reports, loans that are being applied for and the regulations the company must follow. These can be mandated by either the government or the corporation. Sometimes it is both.

Paralegals use computers extensively to research legal issues and material that is pertinent to the cases they are helping to prepare. The billing hours can be tracked using the computer as well as preparing and paying income tax. The documents that may be needed by the lawyers can all be scanned into the computer. This lessens the chance of something being misplaced; there will always be a copy.

The working hours for paralegals may be long especially when there is lot of research for upcoming cases. When working for large corporate law firms, there is bound to be high profile cases the firm will represent. The paralegal has to be trustworthy and ready to work at a moment's notice.

What are the Education Requirements?

One of the typical ways to become a paralegal is to take classes through your local community college. Many have paralegal programs, which will allow you to obtain an associate's degree. There are schools, which offer both the associate and bachelor's degrees for paralegals. There are certification processes although these are usually for those who have graduated from college and already have a bachelor or associate's degree.

There is another option as well. An employer may train an assistant as a paralegal. This can be done while the assistant is studying for a degree. Many of the programs for paralegal jobs are approved by the American Bar Association. This is an impressive educational achievement when viewed on your résumé. Students planning to go into this line of work often join internship programs to get the experience.

What are the Earnings of Paralegals?

The salaries of paralegals will vary with the area in which they will be working, the training they have taken, and the employer for which they work. The larger corporate companies naturally will have the resources to pay a better wage than a smaller one. Many people apply to large law firms in big cities. The salary range for paralegals is typically between $33,920 and $54,690 per year. Although the higher percentage of paralegals can earn more than $67,000 per year but the lower percentage only earns approximately $27,000 per year or less.

The paralegal may have other incentives besides wages. There are many who receive compensation for the longer hours they work. The benefits are also good. Vacation time, sick leave, life insurance, medical and dental insurance and access to a 401 savings plan. Many are reimbursed for the education they pursue when it comes to furthering their education.
