Job Title: Assistant General Counsel, Labor & Employment
Job Responsibilities:
The position of Assistant General Counsel, Labor & Employment at the company entails a comprehensive array of responsibilities that are pivotal to the organization's adherence to employment laws and effective management of labor-related legal matters. The key responsibilities include:
- Offering timely and pragmatic legal advice to management and Human Resources on a wide spectrum of employment law issues such as hiring, leaves of absence, accommodations, performance management, discipline, terminations, discrimination/harassment, job eliminations, reductions in force, employee benefits, wage and hour issues, worker classifications, and other employee relations matters.
- Collaborating closely with Human Resources and business leaders to ensure that business strategies are executed in a manner that is both practical and compliant with applicable laws.
- Drafting clear, concise, and persuasive position statements and other written submissions for administrative charges and investigations conducted by agencies such as the EEOC, DOL, and NLRB.
- Drafting, reviewing, and updating employment-related policies, handbooks, and agreements to ensure legal compliance and alignment with best practices.
- Preparing and delivering training sessions to HR professionals, managers, and employees on employment law compliance and best practices.
- Monitoring developments in federal, state, and local employment and labor laws, and proactively advising stakeholders on potential risks and implications.
- Representing the organization in employment disputes and litigation, which includes supervising outside counsel, overseeing litigation strategies, and managing legal budgets.
- Conducting and supervising internal investigations related to employee complaints or compliance matters.
- Establishing and maintaining relationships, credibility, and trust with business leaders, HR, members of the Legal Department, and other colleagues.
Education and Experience Information:
The role demands a specific educational background and level of experience, which includes:
- A . degree from an accredited law school.
- Licensure to practice law and membership in good standing of a state bar.
- A minimum of 8 years of legal experience with a primary focus on employment law, which should include a combination of law firm and in-house experience. Experience with a top-tier national labor & employment law firm is preferred.
- Expertise in federal, state, and local employment laws, including multi-state compliance, leaves of absence/accommodations, wage and hour issues, and discrimination/harassment laws. Experience in benefits is considered an additional asset.
- Demonstrated ability to provide business-oriented, practical legal advice, supported by sound and practical business judgment.
- Exceptional legal writing skills with proven experience in drafting persuasive responses to administrative agency charges (., EEOC, DOL, NLRB, state agencies).
- The ability to multitask and operate effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment, managing multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, build relationships, and earn credibility.
- Experience advising multi-state employers and navigating varying state employment laws is strongly preferred.
Salary Information:
The company is legally required in many locations to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The compensation range takes into account a variety of factors considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the top of the range for their role, as compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current base range for this role is $210,000 - $230,000.
