Dear LawCrossing,

I am a 2L at a state school where the recruiting focus is very much on local firms. How can I start my search for a job in a different city?

As a law student, how can you search for jobs in another city?

Stuck in Dodge in Minnesota

Dear Mr. Dodge,

You will likely find this to be a difficult undertaking, but not an impossible one. First, you'll need to research the firms in the area under consideration. If it's more than one area, you should refocus so that it is only one area. A single search is taxing enough.

It's likely that you'll have to travel to that locale (on your nickel), using the excuse that you're going to "be in town for x, and would sure like to drop by to talk with them about their professional needs. . ."
United States

Most firms will accommodate you, and will take your initiative as a good sign of your motivation and maturity. You should have a ready answer to the question "Why do you want to move here?" If it's because you like surfing, well, that's probably not the most effective response. If it's to be near family, or for another "good" reason, most firms will accept it, and you.

As always, good luck.
