In an emailed statement, spokesperson and partner Tanseem K. Goodman said that resizing decisions were not based on performance, but implemented in order to improve efficiency and ensure growth. Goodman added that despite the economic downturn ‘the firm’s financial performance remains strong.’ First-year associates and legal staffers were not affected by the cutbacks.
The layoffs come in response to a decline in demand for legal services in areas of litigation, capital markets, and real estate as the credit squeeze and lack of liquidity in the markets affect the global economy.
