<<When 25-year-old Elizabeth Barrett looked into possibly entering law school, she decided to base her decision on her areas of strength.

"I took a constitutional law class at Michigan State University [as an] undergrad," Barrett explains. "I got a 99% in the class, which was by far the highest grade I ever got in undergrad, so I decided to look into [law] more since I had done so well and enjoyed it so much."

Barrett, who has Italian roots on her great grandparents' side, grew up in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. She picked Michigan State University College of Law because she was familiar with the setting.

"I used to study at the law library while I was in undergrad at MSU, and I always felt very comfortable there," she says.

As an undergraduate, Barrett attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She studied organizational communications and criminal justice and had a "great" experience, which led her to law school.

Although Barrett enjoys living in Michigan, she feels that she will have to move out of the state to progress in her career.

"I would like to work in Michigan, but the economy here is just too bad," she says. "I've always loved Tennessee, though, and I'm happy to say that I have decided to move there after graduation."

As for the specific areas of law Barrett wants to focus on, she says she's interested in a few.

"I really love labor and employment law. I also really like workers' compensation, so I'd like to be in either one of those areas of practice," she says. "I'm also interested in entertainment law, which really boils down to contract law and labor law."

Barrett has already been a law clerk for two different solo practitioners in the area.

Now going into her third year, Barrett looks back fondly at her time in law school thus far. She even lightheartedly says that her favorite memory of law school is her first year.

"Everyone said it was horrible, and to some extent it was, but it was all still new then. Classes were exciting and scary at the same time. You had no idea what you were doing, and everyone banded together," she recalls. "But when you got those first grades back, and they were As, it was the greatest sense of accomplishment and the greatest feeling of 'See, I can do this. This wasn't a mistake. I am smart, and I can kick law school's butt!'"

Barrett recommends that future law students take the schooling process very seriously.

"Do not slack off. There are more and more kids going to law school every day. It's a huge investment, and you'd better be sure you're at the top of your class because if you're not, you will not find a job, and you will not make the kind of money you expect to coming out of law school," she advises. "Oh, and stay out of relationships. You can't focus on school the way you should if you're in one."

Even though Barrett advises students to leave boyfriends and girlfriends out of the mix during law school, she adds that including a hobby in one's life may just be a lifesaver for students.

"I used to dance — ever since I was three. I wish I had kept that in my life. It would have been a good release while in school," she confesses. "Hold on to things that have been a part of your life, and use them as a way to ground yourself and to release the stress of school."

Barrett plans on graduating this coming May.
