Creative Classes for Law Students in the Future: Charting Courses

Law in the internet society

Eben moglen professor of law, columbia law school In this class, I'll be explaining why the music industry has vanished and been replaced by a system in which artists and audiences directly communicate, and musicians get paid by the people who love their work. We'll look at why the movie industry is disappearing, most recently replaced by a completely new art form that doesn't exist in 2003. We'll be studying the movement for free telecommunication because in 2023, we'll be in the closing decade of the struggle to make telecommunications as much an individual right as the right to breathable air or drinking water, ones which nobody has to pay for and everybody has access to.

The rights of animals

sex, gender, and terrorism

Catharine mackinnon elizabeth a. long professor of law, university of michigan law school I'd like to think I could teach something called Sex Inequality: A History of Its Legal Undoing. But it's more likely that I'll be teaching a large body of transnational law on sex, gender, and terrorism, combining the violence against women that is domestic everywhere—and I think the double entendre on 'domestic' speaks for itself here—with other international forms of male violence.

The right to counsel

Norman spauldingacting professor of law, the university of california at berkeley school of law The developments over the last three years in the war against terrorism are interesting from the perspective of professional responsibility and access to counsel. They're also a little bit frightening, given what's happening in the Yaser Esam Hamdi and Jose Padilla cases, where you have U.S. citizens who are not allowed access to counsel. Two decades down the road it'll be interesting to see whether the government's strong stance against access to counsel is actually in the interest of national security or whether the right to counsel will be seen as an important component in providing national security.

Art law

Amy adler professor of law, new york university school of law I'd like to teach this course as a way of taking the pulse of culture, and of legal culture, in the future. Art law is a good place for marking what in our culture is beyond the pale, what is impermissible. It's a great window into our cultural values and anxieties. Art law also is a good way of looking at the interaction between law and culture. I'm interested in how legal norms police and reflect cultural norms, but, in some ways, also end up producing culture. This is a complex interaction. I'm curious to see what art will look like in 20 years because of the dramatic changes that are going on right now in art, particularly in terms of the Internet. I wonder whether anyone will still paint.
