Job Title: Staff Accountant
Job Responsibilities:
The Staff Accountant at the law firm is tasked with a variety of essential duties and responsibilities that are crucial to the financial integrity and operational efficiency of the firm. These responsibilities include:
- Performing monthly bank reconciliations for all local operating, money market, and trust accounts. This involves recording necessary journal entries for adjustments and coordinating with Accounts Payable, Payroll, and Treasury Services to resolve any bank variances.
- Reconciling cleared checks for all firm accounts to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Conducting a daily review of all firm bank accounts against the Accounting System to monitor for accuracy and resolve any daily account variances, including returns such as ACH and checks.
- Assisting in the daily balancing of accounting systems, as well as during the month-end and year-end close cycles.
- Reconciling client credit card payments on a monthly basis and addressing any issues that arise.
- Assisting with data and document requests related to financial audits and tax returns.
- Preparing monthly balance sheet account reconciliations, including those for accrued liabilities.
- Adding assets and projects into the fixed asset software (Sage) under the guidance of the General Accounting Manager.
- Aiding in the preparation and filing of the firm’s personal property tax returns and handling monthly and annual use tax filings.
- Organizing accounting files, both physical and electronic, which includes tax filings, leases, and bank documents.
- Completing special projects as requested by management, ensuring that all tasks are done accurately and efficiently.
Education and Experience Information:
- A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required for this position.
- While the firm prefers candidates with three years of experience, it will consider new college graduates. Experience in a legal setting is considered a plus.
- The candidate must have a strong understanding of general ledger, balance sheet, income statement, and financial reporting principles.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must, with advanced technical skills in Excel required.
- Experience with Aderant accounting software or similar platforms is highly desired.
- The role requires excellent communication, time management, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- The candidate should be a proactive, inquisitive, and analytical problem solver capable of exercising independent judgment and demonstrating a proven track record of improvements in areas of responsibility.
- The ability to collaborate and cross-team with all finance team members while promoting a positive work environment that embraces diversity is essential.
- Flexibility and the ability to prioritize workload effectively are required, along with excellent attention to detail.
