JOB TITLE:
- Law Office Assistant 1 (02-N07035 & 02-N07043)
EXPERIENCE INFORMATION:
- One year of experience in customer service, information exchange, and administrative tasks
- Prior legal experience not required, on-the-job training provided

ORGANIZATION:
- Public Defender Agency
- Appointed by the Court to represent individuals who cannot afford counsel
- Protects clients' constitutional rights
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
- Non-permanent on-call position
- Provides clerical support to attorneys and Agency administrators
- Maintains case file information, processes police reports and evidence, answers phones, files pleadings, prepares legal documents, and assists clients
- Part-time or full-time based on availability and Agency need
MISSION AND CULTURE:
- Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to counsel
- Law Office Assistants play a significant role in providing representation and protecting clients' rights
- Work closely with attorneys and other Agency staff
- Ensure evidence and case materials are processed and distributed quickly
- Serve as important points of contact for the Court system, opposing counsel, and the public

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Offices located in Fairbanks and downtown Anchorage
- Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM with an hour lunch at noon
- Interacts with attorneys, investigators, paralegals, and law office assistants
- Communicates regularly with co-workers across the state, clients, and court system staff
COMPETENCIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- One year of experience in customer service, information exchange, and administrative tasks
- Substitutions: post-secondary education or applicable experience
- Associate's degree or vocational-technical certification in a legal support or business support career area
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to obtain a Notary Public upon hire
- Must pass a criminal background check
- Some positions may require regular overtime and work on weekends and holidays
