Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law

In contrast to the recent ban on popular artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT at the University of Michigan Law School, Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University has taken a progressive step by explicitly allowing prospective students to leverage generative artificial intelligence tools to aid them in drafting their applications. This move aims to equip students with additional resources to present their admissions package effectively.

According to a spokesperson from Arizona State Law School, applicants must confirm their use of generative AI and attest to the accuracy of the information submitted. This certification process is similar to the one already in place for students who seek assistance from professional consultants during their application process.

Dean Stacy Leeds of the Phoenix-based law school emphasized that embracing AI reflects the evolving legal landscape, where lawyers and law students increasingly integrate AI tools into their practices. Leeds acknowledged that some applicants already seek help from consultants or utilize online resources for crafting their personal statements. The introduction of generative AI as an acceptable tool aims to make this technology accessible to all applicants, regardless of their economic circumstances.

However, it's important to note that the new policy is limited to prospective students only. The law school is still in the process of formulating guidelines for the use of AI within coursework and classroom settings.

The University of California, Berkeley School of Law pioneered adopting a formal policy on using artificial intelligence in the classroom, allowing its selective use under certain conditions, excluding exams and written assignments.

On the other hand, the revised policy at Michigan Law School explicitly prohibits using ChatGPT and similar AI tools during the admissions process. Prospective students must certify that they have adhered to this prohibition, with false certification potentially leading to the revocation of admission or expulsion.

Law school admissions consultant Mike Spivey predicts there will likely be a divergence among law schools regarding the use of AI in their processes. Some schools might restrict AI usage to specific components, such as personal statements and essays, while others may fully embrace its potential.

To ensure prospective students at Arizona State Law School are well-informed about AI's permissible uses and potential pitfalls, the school plans to provide educational videos on the subject. Dean Leeds emphasizes that while AI tools are welcome, students must still effectively communicate their experiences and perspectives in their applications, emphasizing the importance of authenticity.

In conclusion, the decision by Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law to embrace AI tools in the admissions process represents a forward-thinking approach to modernizing legal education and making innovative resources accessible to aspiring law students.
