To recognize a distinguished teacher in criminal justice education. Evidence of teaching effectiveness must include a list of courses taught and evaluations. William L. Simon/Anderson Publishing Outstanding Paper Award

For recognition of excellence in a paper presented at the ACJS Annual Conference. The following criteria are considered: conceptual and methodological rigor in the development of the thesis and its subsequent empirical or logical documentation, theoretical or pragmatic relevance of the thesis and its importance to the development of a body of knowledge for criminal justice, and quality of writing. Richard Beatty Mellon Environmental Stewardship Award

To recognize an individual whose contributions of a civic nature, whether administrative, legislative, or judicial, have aided substantially in the abatement of air pollution. Eligibility for the award requires the sincere and constant effort of an individual over a period of time to develop or increase interest in or acceptance of the cause of air pollution control and waste management for the betterment of man’s environment. This individual should have attained wide prominence and be well known for his interest in air pollution control. Both members and nonmembers of A&WMA are eligible. Awarded annually. Established in 1954 in memory of Richard Beatty Mellon (1858-1933) who, in the desire to benefit mankind, with his brother, Andrew William Mellon, established the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research in 1913 and led in instituting and sustaining the first modem investigations looking to ways and means for controlling the pollution of the atmosphere.

To recognize a significant contribution to legal bibliographical literature published in the past year. A certificate is awarded annually at the Annual Meeting. Established in 1967 in honor of Joseph L. Andrews, reference librarian for the Bar Association of the City of New York Library.

Marian Gould Gallagher Distinguished Service Award

This, the Association’s highest honor, is given to recognize extended and sustained service to law librarianship for exemplary service to the Association, or for contributions to the professional literature. Individuals must be members of the American Association of Law Libraries and nearing retirement or recently retired from an active professional career to be eligible. A plaque is awarded annually at the National Meeting. Established in 1984; renamed in 1990 to honor Marian Gould Gallagher.

Law Library Publications Award

To honor achievement in creating in-house library materials that are outstanding in quality and significance. Aall/lexisnexis Call for Papers Awards

To promote scholarship among practicing law libraries and in areas of interest to the profession; provide an outlet for creativity for law libraries and a forum for their scholarly activities; and recognize the scholarly efforts of established members, new members, and potential members of AALL. Papers may be submitted on any subject relevant to law librarianship, and are judged in three categories: the Open Division, for papers submitted by current AALL members who have been members for five or more years; the New Member Division, for papers submitted by individuals who have been AALL members for less than five years; and the Student Division, for papers submitted by students in library, information management, or law school.

A monetary prize of $750 is awarded annually in each division. Sponsored by LexisNexis.

Excellence in Marketing Award

To recognize outstanding achievement in public relations activities during the previous year in five categories: Best Brochure, Best Newsletter, Best Campaign, Best Public Relations Tool Kit, and Best Use of Technology. Awarded annually. Established in 1998.

Aall Spectrum Article of the Year Award

Honors outstanding achievements in writing an article that contributes to topics relating to librarianship, law librarianship, and practical applications for library work or to an understanding of legal materials, legal systems, legal information, or to professional and staff training and development. A monetary prize of $500 is awarded annually. Established in 2000.

New Product Award

To recognize new commercial information products that enhance or improve existing law library services or procedures or innovative products which improve access to legal information, the legal research process, or procedures for technical processing of library materials. New products may include but are not limited to computer hardware and/or software, educational or bibliographic mate-rial, or other products or devices that aid or improve library workflow, research, or intellectual access. Frederick Charles Hicks Award for Outstanding Contributions to Academic Law Librarianship

Recognizes distinguished service to academic law librarianship that has been extended and sustained. Awarded annually. Established in 2000 in honor of the first great American law librarian/ scholar, who was also the first academic law librarian to serve as President of AALL. Bethany J. Ochal Award for Distinguished Service to the Profession

Recognizes significant contributions to law librarianship by a State, Court and County Law Libraries Special Interest Section member who is nearing the end of his or her library career or who has recently retired. Outstanding Law Day Activity Awards

Roger N. Baldwin Medal of Liberty Award

For recognition of distinguished lifetime service to the cause of civil liberties or an exceptional specific contribution to civil liberties. Letourneau Award

Littleton-griswold Research Grant

To support research in U.S. legal history and in the general field of law and society. The funds for this program come from the earnings of the Littleton- Griswold Fund. Only members of the Association are eligible to apply. The grants are intended to further research in progress and may be used for travel to a library or archive, for microfilms, photographs, or photocopying. Preference is given to those with specific research needs, such as the completion of a project or completion of a discrete segment thereof. To encourage young inventors to continue and learn about the patent system. Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition

To stimulate law students' grasp of intellectual property law problems. An annual moot court competition is held at the regional and national levels for school teams. A monetary prize of $2,000 and a certificate are awarded for first place; the runners-up receive $1,000 and a certificate; and regional finalists receive a certificate. Regional finals are held in March each year, with national finals in Washington, DC, in mid-April. Established in 1974.

Edward J. Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award

To recognize Article III judges whose careers have been exemplary, measured by their significant contributions to the administration of justice, the advancement of the rule of law, and the improvement of society as a whole. Lindy Boggs Award

Scotia Knouff Line Officer of the Year Award

This, the most competitive and prestigious practitioner award, is given to recognize the probation, parole, or community corrections officer who has performed assigned duties in an outstanding manner and/or made significant contributions to the probation, parole, or community corrections profession at the local, regional, or national level and/or brought credit or honor to the profession through participation or involvement in community activities or programs. To recognize a non-practitioner for significant contributions to the field of probation, parole, or criminal justice technology. Individuals from academic, research, or government agencies not engaged in providing probation and public services are eligible. Awarded annually. Established in 1986.

Walter Dunbar Memorial Award

To recognize significant contributions by a practicing professional or a retired practitioner in the field of probation and/or parole. Awarded annually. Established in 1986 in memory of Walter Dunbar, who served as Director of the California Department of Corrections, Chairman of the U.S. Parole Commission, and Director of the New York State Division of Probation.

Sam Houston State University Award

To recognize an individual for a published article concerning probation, parole, or community corrections that provides new information and insight into the operation, effectiveness, or the future of the community corrections profession. Articles published in national or regional journals may be submitted. Awarded annually. Established in 1986.

Presidents Award

To recognize exemplary community correction programs that serve to advance the knowledge, effectiveness, and integrity of the system. Organizations that have exemplified the management and innovations necessary to lead community corrections toward the future are considered. Eligible candidates that meet all or a combination of the following criteria are eligible: changes or contributes to the broad field of community corrections and helps to move the field forward; a dear correlation exists between the candidate’s goals and their effect; makes a difference that is supported by impact data; the elements of the project/program/agency can be repeated by others; and shows clear evidence of the supportive nature of the environment. The candidates are evaluated on the following characteristics: program implementation process, client assessment practices, characteristics that match the client’s needs, therapeutic integrity, relapse prevention techniques, staff characteristics, and evaluation. Awarded annually.

Joe Kegans Award for Victims Services in Probation and Parole

Honors exemplary services to victims of crime. Individuals working in community corrections are eligible. Nominees may be living or deceased. Preference will be given to community correction professions or volunteers who have personally experienced criminal victimization and have used that experience to help others. Awarded annually. Established in honor of Judge Joe Kegans, a founding member of APPA’s Victim Issues Committee, who devoted her career as a jurist to bettering the lives of all with whom she came into contact.

Member of the Year Award

Recognizes the work and energy of a worthy APPA member. Current APPA members who have been members for at least one year and have provided significant contributions to the organization through promotion of vision and mission of APPA are eligible. Any member may submit a nomination. A complimentary ten-year membership is awarded annually.

Award for Excellence in Community Crime Prevention

Recognizes the integration of community crime prevention initiatives into the traditional roles of supervision, intervention, and sanctioning of offenders. Community corrections agencies or community crime prevention programs coordinating with a community corrections agency are eligible to receive this award. Awarded annually.

Community Awareness Through Media Award

Manfred S. Guttmacher Award

Dissertation Award

To recognize the best doctoral dissertation within a given year in psychology and law. The dissertation must take into regard the importance and design of the research. A monetary prize of $500 is awarded for 1st place, $300 for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd place is awarded annually. Established in 1983.

Diversity in Psychology and Law Research Award

To promote diversity within the Society by supporting student research on psycholegal issues related to diversity as well as research by students from underrepresented groups. Current full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Three grants of $1,000 are awarded annually.

Award for Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in the Field of Psychology and Law

To recognize outstanding teaching in different environments. In even-numbered years, the award is presented to a teacher or mentor from an undergraduate program. In odd-numbered years,

the award is presented to teacher or mentor at a doctoral-granting schools. A plaque and cash prize of $500 are awarded annually. Established in 1996.

Saleem Shah Award

To recognize outstanding contributions to psychology and law by individuals early in their careers. Two monetary awards of $1,000 (one from the AP-LS and one from AAFP) and a plaque are presented annually. Established in 1995.

Book Award

To recognize a book about psychology and law and outstanding scholarship in those fields. Scholarly books published in the last two years are eligible.

Viscount Bennett Fellowship

To encourage a high standard of legal education, training, and ethics by offering a fellowship to a student for post-graduate studies in law. Canadian citizens who have graduated or who, at the time of application, are pursuing final year studies as an undergraduate student at an approved law school are eligible. Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Law

Louis St. Laurent Award of Excellence

Recognizes distinguished or exceptional service to the objectives and goals of the CBA. Granted annually, the award is a bronze statue made in the shape of the statue crafted by Ziggy Puchta, located in front of the Supreme Court of Canada Building in Ottawa. Established in 1992.

Douglas Miller Award

To recognize a member who demonstrates outstanding dedication and team spirit in his or her ongoing involvement with the CBA. Each year the award, a sculpture entitled "Crane" carved from a musk ox hom by Northwest Territories artist Rex Goose, is presented to the winner. Award may not be granted every year. Established in 1996 in memory of Douglas Miller of Yellowknife.

Justicia Award

To recognize excellence in journalism fostering public awareness and understanding of the Canadian Justice System, the awards are given for French or English stories in two categories: print and broadcast media. The award is a miniature bronze replica of the statue of Justice in front of the Supreme Court of Canada Building in Ottawa. Certificates of Merit may be presented for meritorious entries at the discretion of the judges.

Young Lawyers’ Pro Bono Award

Recognizes outstanding pro bono legal services to the community by a young Canadian Bar Association lawyer in Canada. Candidates must be CBA members who are either under the age of 40 or have practiced for 10 years or less. The winner is awarded a monetary prize of C$500 and is announced in a news release and tribute published in the Association magazine National. Awarded annually. Established in 1994.

Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

Conference (sogic) Awards

To recognize excellence within the Canadian legal professional in advancing the cause of equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, and two- spirited (GLBT) people. The (1) SOGIC Ally is open to members not included in the GLBT community who have had a single significant action or several actions in a career; (2) SOGIC Hero is for members of the GLBT community who have similarly contributed. The selection committee considers gender equity when determining award recipients. Awarded annually. Established in 1999.

James H. Bocking Memorial Award

Recognizes the best scholarly paper or article related to Canadian competition law or policy. A monetary prize is awarded annually through the James H. Booking Memorial Fund.

The Honourable Walter S. Tarnopolsky Human Rights Award

To recognize a resident of Canada who has made an outstanding contribution to domestic or international human rights. The award is administered by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), Canadian Section, and is an inscribed bronze medallion and an honorarium of C$1,000. The award is presented at the annual meeting of the ICJ held during the Canadian Bar Association Annual Meeting. Established in 2000 in honor of the talented human rights advocate and scholar.

Walter Owen Book Prize

To recognize excellent legal writing and reward new contributions to Canadian legal literature that enhances the quality of Canadian legal research. A cash prize of C$10,000 is awarded to English

works in odd-numbered years and French works in even-numbered years. Funded by the Foundation for Legal Research.

Edward K. Rowan-legg Award

To recognize a student member for dedicated contribution to the CBA and participation in the Canadian Legal Conference. A monetary prize of C$1,000, an engraved plaque, plus complimentary registration at the annual conference are awarded annually. Established in 2003.

Touchstone Award

Recognizes an individual who has excelled in promoting equality in the legal profession, the judiciary, or the legal community in Canada. The award recognizes significant national initiative to advance equality and/or contribution relating to race, disability, sexual orientation, or other diversity issues in the community. A framed replica of the award, a soapstone sculpture located at the National Office in Ottawa, is awarded annually. Established in 1995.

President’s Award

To recognize the significant contribution of a Canadian jurist to the legal profession, the CBA, or the public life of Canada. Open to all Canadians except the current president, past president within five years, or members of the judiciary while on the bench. Nominations are made by the president. An engraved brass Scales of Justice is awarded annually. Established in 1984.

John Tait Award of Excellence

Recognizes a public sector lawyer or law office that has achieved the highest standards of professional conduct and competence, and has made significant contributions to social justice or community affairs. A statue of Inukshuk (a direction finder) is awarded annually. Established in 1998 as the Inukshuk Award of Excellence.

David Estrin Award

To recognize and encourage interest in environmental, energy, and resources law topics in Canadian law schools. Award goes to the winner of the Law School Essay Contest administered by CBA's National Environmental, Energy and Resources Law Sedion. A monetary prize of $500 and travel expenses to the Annual Conference are awarded. Honors David Estrin, a pioneer in environmental law in Canada.

Crystal Scales of Justice Prize

To discover and highlight innovative and efficient practices used in European courts for court organization or for the conduct of civil proceedings, and deserving to be drawn to the attention of policymakers and the judicial community so as to improve the operation of the public system of justice. Awarded annually by COE’s European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice. Established in 2005. Co-administered by the European Commission.

North-south Prize

To recognize individuals for: the defense and promotion of human rights and pluralistic democracy; the development of intercultural dialogue; raising of public awareness of the issues of global interdependence and solidarity; or reinforcement of the North-South partnership. A statuette is awarded annually to two recipients, one from the north and one from the south. Administered by the COE's European Centre for Global Interdependence and Solidarity, more commonly known as the North-South Centre. Established in 1995.
