I'm a 2L at Harvard Law. But my grades aren't so hot. Overall, I have an average between a B and B+. My question is how much do grades follow you after you've landed your first law firm job? Five or 10 years down the road, when I'm searching for new jobs, do firms/companies request your transcript from law school?
It all depends on the firm with which you are interviewing. As you become more experienced, some firms are not interested in seeing your transcript. However, the more mainstream or national firms will want to see your transcript even five or 10 years down the road. Some corporations sometimes tend to be a bit more forgiving about grades but then again, the Fortune 100 companies may not be so lenient.
Believe it or not, I have placed partners with significant books of portable business and the interested law firm still asks to see their transcripts ... even 25 years into the attorney's professional life! My advice - and I am sure that this will come as no surprise if you have read any of my past columns -is to concentrate on your grades for the next year and a half and be the best you can possibly be. Best wishes!
