To be successful in your job search, you must know what you are looking for. Knowledge of the job market, an effective resume — introduction to a superior list of employers - all great assets in any job campaign - will not help you if you are unaware of your real interests and motivations.

It is well worth spending a little time analyzing the inner you - discovering in what situations you are the happiest, just exactly what excites you. Socrates had a point when he said that the basis of wisdom is self-knowledge, and from that awareness all other knowledge can be acquired. Surely it is impossible to understand anything until you understand yourself.

Self-Analysis Quiz

The following are a few questions which, if considered carefully, will give you more insights into your preferences and will help you in career evaluations. A space is provided for your answer to the left of each question.

  1. Are you person-or object-oriented? Are you happiest

(a) spending an evening with friends?

(b) working alone doing home improvements, using your computer, quilting, or gardening?

      2. Do you find yourself

(a) believing in the pursuit of money as an end in itself?

(b) being seduced by "causes" and setting other objectives ahead of more money?

      3. Are you a person who

(a) works best under pressure and is happiest when faced with almost insurmountable demands?

(b) enjoys a steady, quiet, predictable pace?

      4. Are you usually the "life of the party," the person
who initiates group activities?

(a) Yes (b) No

      5. Are you happiest when you can be of service to others?

(a) Yes (b) No

      6. Are you more comfortable when involved with

(a) measurable facts?

(b) creative, abstract ideas?

      7. Are you interested in travel - seeing the country, the world?

(a) Yes (b) No

An Analysis of Your Answers

  1. If your answer was (a), you should work in a people-oriented field, such as: matrimonial, worker's compensation, administration, negligence, teaching. If your answer was (b) (hobbies you engage in alone), you would probably be happier in a field not involved with one-to-one relationships, such as: research, anti-trust, tax.
  2. If your answer was (a), you would be happy in a profit-making business. Your choices include: corporate law or insurance companies. If your answer was (b), you should try for a job in social service, government, foundations, or the health fields.
  3. If your answer was (a), you will find plenty of pressure in such fields as service businesses-collection, matrimonial, negligence, worker's compensation, public relations, employment agencies, or sales. Businesses that involve deadlines are journals and book and magazine publishing. For those who chose (b), a quieter, steadier pace may be found in a field such as teaching.
  4. If you answered "yes," you probably are an extrovert and would be happiest in matrimonial, worker's compensation, or negligence.
  5. If you answered "yes," you probably would be very successful in such fields as public defender or legal aid society work.
  6. If your answer was (a), you will be happiest in research or corporate work.
  7. If you answered "yes," you might investigate military law or international law.

This short questionnaire is, of course, incomplete but it should give you some direction in your attempt to understand yourself. Careful and honest introspection is necessary, and once you discover what you really want, you will find such knowledge invaluable.
