If you are just starting out in the field and have no paralegal experience, an internship may be just what you need to help you get a job. Internships are generally obtained through the career placement center in your paralegal school. It is the best way for paralegals without any prior legal experience to get firsthand knowledge of their newly chosen career.

Because internships do not usually pay a salary of any sort, students sometimes dismiss the value this program can play in getting your first job. According to Richard Shaffran, Director of the UCLA Attorney Assistant Training Program, “students who demonstrate their willingness to donate their time and efforts to an internship program are the candidates employers generally choose first. These students experience firsthand what is only talked about in class. They come better prepared for the tasks at hand.”

An internship may require you to volunteer 4 to 6 hours per week for 6 to 10 weeks in a law firm, in-house legal department, not-for-profit organization or government agency. It is a trainee position, and you could be asked to perform any number of assignments, very much like in an actual job. The advantage to you is that you are a designated trainee, there to learn.

List the internship on your resume even if you are still participating in it. The internship category should be listed directly under education and before prior work history. This shows potential employers that you have some exposure to law office procedures and paralegal assignments. After you have worked for a while as a paralegal, you can either drop the internship on your resume or list it after work experience.
