The firm had its start in the 1930s when Mark Wilmer joined Frank L. Snell, Riney Salmon, and Charles Strouss in practice. Following World War II, Joseph T. Melczer and James Walsh became members of the firm and the name was changed to reflect these additions. When Edwin Beauchamp joined the firm, the name was changed to Snell, Wilmer, Walsh, Melczer, and Beauchamp but quickly shortened to Snell & Wilmer.

Throughout the 1960s, Snell & Wilmer experienced significant growth as new practice areas emerged. New attorneys were consistently brought on board to meet the growing demand for services in the areas of complex business transactions, securities, and utility regulation. In 1989, the firm combined with Bilby & Shoenhair, Tucson's oldest and largest law firm.


Today, as one of the largest law firms in the western US, Snell & Wilmer is capable of handling thousands of diverse clients both within the US and overseas. The firm boasts more than 400 attorneys throughout its nine locations in Denver Colorado; Las Vegas, Nevada; Los Angeles, California; Costa Mesa, California; Phoenix, Arizona; Reno, Nevada; Salt Lake City, Utah; Tucson, Arizona; and Los Cabos, Mexico.

Snell & Wilmer's attorneys excel in a range of practice areas including financial regulation, tax law, labor and employment, US environmental law, water law, real estate and zoning, mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property, product liability, estate planning, telecommunications law, bankruptcy and restructuring, foreclosure, international law, and white-collar criminal defense.

The firm encourages all of its attorneys and paralegals to commit at least 50 hours each year to pro bono activities. Time spent time spent on client issues for evaluation and compensation purposes. According to Snell & Wilmer, on pro bono is credited toward annual performance goals and is taken into consideration with pro bono activities include all legal services provided directly to the poor or to organizations that serve the indigent. These services include poverty law, civil rights and public rights law, and representation for qualifying organizations.
