It can't be easy to play the role of a career services dean in tough economic times; still, it's a job that must be done and those who are able to keep priorities straight while focusing on what's best for their college's students will always fare better than others. Susan M. Guindi, University of Michigan Law School's Assistant Dean for Career Services, is one of those who have the prerequisite focus and ability to prioritize. Her staff works to provide the best opportunities and attempts to open the most doors that will allow law students to gain those important life lessons, including self confidence, that will make the difference once they've acquired their license to practice. Each staff member is trained to recognize which approach works better with each student. As she stated in previous interview, ''My job is to try to do the best I can with 1,100 different personalities...there is no one way to help a student and it's not until we spend any amount of time with them before we can cull the best route. ''

She was a graduate from the University of Michigan Law School and also clerked for Michigan Supreme Court Justice Dennis Archer in 1990. After Justice Archer retired a few years later, she stayed on to serve as the clerk for Justice Conrad Mallet. Perhaps it was a taste of politics, or maybe even a combination of the law and politics, but in the early 1990s, Guindi made the strategic move to Washington D.C.

After serving at one of D.C.'s most prestigious law firms, Guindi knew it was time once again to challenge herself. She decided to return to law school in 1995, where she served in the role of the associate director of the Office of Public Service. A few short years later, she was named the director for the Office of Career Services and in 2001, she was appointed into the role she now currently serves. She takes great pride in all of her career highlights, but she especially knows how important it is for law students to keep their faith and allow it to propel them forward once they've completed their legal education. She provides many different services for both students and alumni. A few of these services include recruiting programs held on campus, career counseling for current and former University of Michigan students and informational programs hosted on campus. To be sure, her priority is always those students who look to her for answers.

Other contributions Susan Guindi have made include a stint as a contributing editor of the Michigan Law Review, a former chair of the Public Service Committee of the National Association of Law Placement and she holds dual memberships in California and Michigan. She graduated Order of the Coif and magna cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School.

For now, Guindi is content in her role as dean; she's focused and truly enjoys the work that is a part of all of her days.
