Start Networking…Now!

Perhaps you haven't quite finished school, or are still waiting for your BAR Exam results. Do NOT wait to start networking for your future career! Unfortunately, with the game of job-hunting, it's about 25% of what you know versus 75% of WHO you know. Be sure to strengthen or maintain relationships with your professors, fellow students, and any legal professionals you may already know. Consider meeting with them and discussing your future plans to see if they have any suggestions on firms or businesses who may be hiring, or people in the field who they could introduce you to.

Many schools also offer socials or activities to meet with successful alumni who have been in your shoes. Take advantage of every opportunity to meet with these professionals. Many times, when it comes down to making a decision between two qualified individuals, a supervisor or partner will tip the scales in favor of a fellow alumni.

Market Yourself

It is also important that even before you complete school and the BAR to begin authoring a strong resume and cover letter. These papers may very well be the first impression that firms or businesses have of you and your skills. Regardless of your experience, if you have not marketed yourself well through your resume and cover letter, you will not be selected for an interview.

Consider enlisting the help of a professional resume
service, such as Attorney Resume or ResumeApple, to help. These businesses specialize in writing resumes and cover letters for attorneys and other legal professionals, which allows you to focus on networking and finding places to send your resumes!

Be Bold!

You know the saying, ''You never know if you never try?'' It is very much applicable with job searching. You want to get on with that top firm? Why not apply? Searching for jobs means that you will have to make yourself vulnerable, which unfortunately means that you may be turned down several times before you get the big call. However, taking risks can pay off in the end, and you may surprise yourself!

Don't Wait for Job Announcements

Send your resume and cover letters to firms and businesses all over, even if they are not immediately ''hiring.'' This will show that you take initiative, and open doors.

Keep a Broad Perspective

Some new lawyers have their minds set on one specific area of practice, for one specific firm, in one specific city. This is okay for some people. However, broadening your search criteria, and keeping a broad perspective about working in the legal field may help you to find a great job that you may have not otherwise considered.

Work Your Way Up

After exhausting all of the preceding methods, if you still have your heart set on a particular firm that you just can't land an associate job with, consider starting lower and working your way up. Perhaps you can begin with the firm in a paralegal or clerkship position, which allows you to get to know the people in charge, and to prove how you are a valuable asset to the firm. Then, when a position does open up in the area you want, you will have a better chance of being considered.
