The August 16 post by Ashby Jones on the Wall Street Journal Law Blog is titled "Law Firms Seeing the Dark Side of the (Hedge Fund) Boom." Jones cites a story from the New York Law Journal to prove that "law firms are starting to see that hedge-fund representations can have a darker side." The upward movement of hedge funds over the last few years has been viewed as a blessing by some in the legal industry, including certain large and mid-sized law firms. Jones's post tells the other side of the story.

At the LawBiz Blog, Ed Poll asserts emphatically, "Law IS a Business" in his August 13 post. Poll argues that "when we encourage lawyers to be business-wise, we are actually seeking to protect the public." And if you want to know what Ed Poll means by that, you know where to look.

Arnie Herz's August 14 post titled "toxic law firms" on legal sanity argues that while considering noxious forces, we tend to "overlook some of the most pervasive ones: the people we work with." Herz says that if you think complaining is the best way to deal with toxic coworkers and firm leaders, you should think again. Complaints only make the workplace more toxic. Negative feelings are infectious, curb creativity, and worsen bad relationships.

The August 15 post at morepartnerincome titled "Price Management for the Law Firm" is priceless. The post opens, "You can't successfully manage price without knowing what your price is and what is happening to it." The Excel spreadsheets demonstrating the "Fee Revenue Model" and "Rolling Effective Rate" add a touch of professionalism to this excellent post that is rarely seen in the blogosphere.

The August 15 post at Strategic Legal Technology, "Hold the Date for the Ark KM Conference," covers the third annual legal KM conference to be held by the Ark Group October 24-25, 2007, in Chicago. The conference, named "Knowledge Management in the Modern Law Firm," will take a closer look at the "high aspirations, false starts, cultural limitations, resource limitations, and technology challenges faced by today's legal KM community."
